Welcome to the
Flow Research Group

A global group of scientists sharing a passion for advancing flow research.

Who, What, Why, & When?

This research group was initiated to bring togther like-minded scientists who are fascinated in flow. It aims to achieve a number of aims with the field of flow science:

  • Increase collaborations

  • Increase information sharing across disciplines

  • Bridge the science and practice of flow

  • Reduce the incomparability of flow research

  • Attract funding into flow science

  • Develop outlets for distributing flow research

  • Foster the careers of flow scientists

  • Inspire new flow research

It is an inclusive scientific space to advance the conceptualization and application of flow, bringing together a range of scientific disciplines and research domains. The group considers flow at multiple levels: including psychological, neuroscientific, biological, experiential, and physiological components. It also includes personal, relational, institutional, cultural, and global aspects of flow.  It is necessary to study a) the dynamic relations between processes at these levels, b) the human capacity to create order, harmony, and meaning in response to inevitable adversity, entropy or conflict, and c) the means by which flow may emerge from these processes.

We meet quarterly online to share insights, ensure momentum of collaborative projects, and connect. We meet biennially in person at the Flow Conference.

Current common goals include (and not limited to):

  • Improving education by integrating the actualization of flow into optimal learning environments

  • Improving health therapies by developing approaches that emphasize hope, meaning, and self-healing through creating more flow for the client

  • Improving individual performance capability across domains by increasing flow experiences

  • Improving group and team cohesion by better understanding collective flow

  • Improving work satisfaction across the lifespan by helping people to find authentic deep engagement and make genuine meaningful contributions in their work

  • Improving organizations and societies by discovering conditions that enhance trust, communication, and flow

  • Improving the virtues of society by better understanding and promoting the spiritual, emotional, and mental need for internal harmony

  • Improving flow measurement accuracy to better capture the experience
