The Presentation

Mindfulness as a Pathway to Flow

The skilful management of attention is critically important in this high tech, fast-paced world we live in. The practice of mindfulness teaches awareness of where attention is, and how to bring it back when it inevitably wanders. Through cultivating the skill of mindfulness, a clear pathway to flow unfolds. In this presentation, this pathway will be discussed, and how mindfulness and flow training can enrich everyday life will be explored.

About the Speaker

Flow Scientist and Psychologist.

Sue is a registered psychologist with a specialisation in sport psychology, and is an expert in flow and its application to performance excellence. Sue has been involved in the psychology of Flow since completing a PhD on flow state in elite athletes in the early 1990s.

Sue’s work in Flow has helped to make this optimal psychological state understandable and more accessible to all levels of performers, from weekend warriors to Olympic champions.

Sue has extensively researched Flow, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. With her mentor and the founder of Flow, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Sue has written the popular book on flow for athletes and coaches, Flow in Sports: The Keys to Optimal Experiences and Performances. In addition, Sue has an extensive publication record on flow in sport, and has worked in academic positions in sport and exercise psychology for many years.

Sue is a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and a Member of the College of Sport and Exercise Psychologists of the APS. In addition to her work in the psychology field, Sue is a teacher of mindfulness and meditation, and has undertaken training in a variety of psychological approaches that emphasise the importance of mindfulness. These approaches include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Integrative Restoration (iRest) Yoga Nidra. Mindfulness offers a great skill set for facilitating flow, and Sue’s work often incorporates mindfulness-based skills training as a pathway to flow.
