Canobi Jay GubriumrMullen FoundationTheresa Conefrey John C. Ory lynn ward Lst as governing techniques have left their institutional spaces and the whole of society has become a prison/school/barracks, so programming has left television and the whole of reality has become programmable. Bios is not just rendered representable or visible (as in the surveillance critique), but amenable to experiments and technique: a reality software. It seeks to render reality visible, manageable, and programmable in accordance with the imperatives of a control society, as well as the expansion of neoliberal autonomization principles. . From one angle, Reality TV is a nightmarish cybernetic dystopia. But the control society is not simply the latest notion in a line of pessimistic scenarios. While RTV seeks to transform the world into an experiment, it is also impossible to contain all impulses into the game dynamic. RTV multiplies life's points of contact with networks of power, a wired habitat that delivers instructions and takes feedback. Making reality programmable means autonomization mechanisms are widely distributed, and thus the mechanisms are loosened from their own channels. Cultural domains now increasingly become open to the auto-valorization of subjects, affective convergence, and social co-operation (which is what RTV, control societies, and neoliberal governing techniques depend on). While conduct is subsumed into the techniques of neoliberal conduction, subsumption does not eliminate antagonism: it displaces it onto social realm, making it part of everyday life and its strategies of freedom. The immanence of the Reality TV’s control dynamics and its dependence upon constituent subjective capacities means that the powers of transformation have no necessary telos. As Toni Negri puts it, "we have finally attained an incredible power that used to belong to the domain of literary anthropology and that is now ours: metamorphosis. The monster can be recognized as the possibility of metamorphosis. Once again, as with every open possibility, one finds oneself faced with a terrible ambiguity: who will rule on this matter?" (Negri, 2003). The RTV monster confronts us with this ambiguity. Robert C. RTV, as Hay and Ouellette argue, does not represent the current conjuncture—it is a training mechanism, deploying a series of rules as a way of shaping and guiding citizens in order to encourage their self-governance. I would add to this that Reality TV intervenes into the conjuncture and enhances particular skills required by it. It programs the real. I want to follow through on the implications of this notion of RTV as set of experimental techniques by highlighting the different models of sovereignty and subjectivity found in governmentality analysis and in autonomist social theory. Even within Foucault’s own work we can see an initial distinction between technologies of power from strategies of freedom. What does it mean to reframe governing as a strategy rather than a technology? Or, how do we think of neoliberal governance as both technique and ethos (its experiments on and interventions in subjectivity)? I want to add this strategic and ethical element to the governmentality framework. Mechanisms do not proliferate on their own, nor is governance the only (or primary) subjectivity. As Robert Thomas puts it, "The primary function of what Foucault called "governmentality"[27]…is the separation of subjectivities from their autonomous or creative potential: that is, the active prevention of the capacity of social subjects to create new ways of living and thinking, new modes of being.?" Covering a wide range of programs, I argue that reality itself becomes a milieu for intervention rather than a source of representation. RTV can be seen as a performative phenomenon that captures, modifies, reorganizes, and distributes powers of transformation. The paradigmatic example here is RTV's prominent makeover trend (both as content as well as in relation to its audience). Reality TV takes the powers of transformation to a new level by embedding them in everyday life. But how is it that reality can be defined as the modifiable? Doesn't it by definition refer to the grounded, the sturdy terrain, the stable strata of being itself? Dislodging reality from these connotations requires us to recall that the etymology of “reality” belongs to a tradition of sovereign power. Reality has its roots not only in the res but also in the rex: of the king or belonging to the king. In its link to “realty”, reality came to accrue the meaning “fixed or immutable property.” Reality, realty, and royalty conceptually emerge in this matrix of land and power. The power to define rested with the sovereign’s power over territory. This etymological lineage means that reality has been less a matter of truth and veracity than about the authority and power to make things happen. What forms of sovereignty are dominant today, and how does that affect both reality and RTV? Negri on Negri. London: Routledge overning as a strategy rather than a technology?
